How energy storage helps keep the power on

Energy storage powers our daily lives. The same technology that charges our phones, laptops, and electric vehicles is now making our electric grid more reliable. It enables our homes, businesses, and transportation infrastructure to run on clean, affordable electricity. 

Battery energy storage systems are one of the solutions utilities like Puget Sound Energy can use to meet increasing electricity demand and provide a more reliable and clean energy supply to its customers. 

BESS is designed to store excess energy from the grid – including energy generated by renewable sources like wind and solar - and deliver that power back to homes and businesses when demand for electricity is high or renewable generation is lower. Batteries can also support the electrical grid during extreme weather events and other disruptions

  • Power grid operators have been reliably operating battery storage systems for more than a decade. 

  • The 100 MW Portal Way Reliability Project will have the capacity to store and discharge enough energy to support up to 80,000 households during periods of high demand daily.

  • Since 2013, battery costs have declined more than 90%, and they can now store about three times as much energy as before
